Veteran and Military Student Affairs

Eastern Iowa Community Colleges are dedicated to providing our veteran and military students information and assistance with your education benefits program through the Department of Veterans Affairs. Clinton, Muscatine and Scott Community Colleges have certifying officials on campus who will register and certify you for your education benefits, and our academic staff is committed to ensuring each student is directed and registered meeting your specific academic and career program needs.

EICC’s military/veteran student affairs facilitator assists students by connecting them with available services.

Veterans' Exemption

A veteran of military service or the National Guard or his/her spouse or dependent children shall be classified as a resident if the veteran is domiciled in Iowa and one of the following conditions is met:

The veteran has separated from a U.S. military force with an honorable discharge or a general discharge, is eligible for benefits, or has exhausted benefits, under the federal Post-9/11 Veterans Educational Assistance Act of 2008 or any other federal authorizing veteran educational benefits program.
The individual is an active duty military person, or activated or temporarily mobilized National Guard member.

To be eligible for the exemption, a dependent child must be claimed as a dependent on an eligible veteran’s Internal Revenue Service tax filing for the previous year.

Students Called to Active Military Duty

EICC appreciates the contributions of our students who have served or are currently serving in the military.
Students who are called to active military duty should immediately contact the Veteran’s Affairs Office on their
campus, or designate a family member to do so.

Students who are a member, or the spouse of a member if the member has a dependent child, of the National Guard or reserve forces of the United States and who is ordered to national guard duty or federal active duty may exercise one of the following options:

Withdraw from the student’s entire registration and receive a full refund of tuition and mandatory fees.
Make arrangements with the student’s instructors for grades, or for incompletes that shall be completed by the student at a later date. If such arrangements are made, the student’s registration shall remain intact and tuition and mandatory fees shall be assessed for the courses in full.
Make arrangements with only some of the student’s instructors for grades, or for incompletes that shall be completed by the student at a later date. If such arrangements are made, the registration for those courses shall remain intact and tuition and mandatory fees shall be assessed for those courses. Any course for which arrangements cannot be made for grades or incompletes shall be considered dropped and the tuition and mandatory fees for the course refunded.

Students who must report for drill during the semester that will interfere with classes must:

Contact the instructor as soon as the student is aware of the duty dates.
Produce written proof (orders, letter from CDMR or ISG., etc.) to the instructors and academic advisors.
Create a course of action prior to speaking with instructors.
Schedule a meeting time with instructors to present written documentation and action plan.
