High School Equivalency

Adult Education Classes

Eastern Iowa Community Colleges Adult Education and Literacy Program provides Adult Basic Education, High School Equivalency, and English Language Acquisition instruction online and at various locations throughout the service area.  Remote classes are currently delivered in a Live Online environment, using the Zoom videoconference platform.  Students may choose from morning and evening options in addition to the delivery method.

Adult Basic Education (ABE) classes develop reading, writing, speaking and math skills. Programming is designed to help anyone 17 years of age or older, who is not enrolled in high school, to take the steps necessary toward passing the High School Equivalency Test.

Student Eligibility

Eligible participants must meet the following requirements:

  • Minimum 16 years + 9 months of age
  • Not currently enrolled in a public or private high school
  • State-Issued photo ID
  • Students age 18 or under must provide a drop slip from their last school district
  • Students age 17 or under must provide a permission to attend form

New Student Orientation

Students who are new to the program or who are returning after an extended absence will have the opportunity to participate in an orientation session.  The orientation will provide the most recent updates regarding processes and procedures in obtaining your high school equivalency credential as efficiently as possible.  You will also learn about the various options for enrollment and will work with the orientation facilitator to be assigned to your classes.  All orientation sessions are delivered via Zoom so that you can familiarize yourself with the technology.  If you do not have access to Zoom, you may make arrangements to use the Zoom equipment at one of our centers.

Assessments and Testing

Assessment and Testing services are available by appointment in-person at several locations or are available remotely by request.

HiSET testing is available in the face-to-face format at the Muscatine, Clinton, and West Davenport testing centers. HiSET does offer a HiSET@Home option for those interested in testing remotely.  Note that HiSET charges an extra fee per test for remote proctoring services.  HiSET testers must also have an appointment to test.

Technology Requirements

To access remote classes and intake assessments, you will need the following:

  • Computer, laptop, or tablet
  • Camera
  • Microphone
  • Reliable internet connection

If you have access to the required equipment but do not have access to internet services, we offer free access to our public WIFI at all locations. If you are testing in one of our centers, all technology will be provided for you.

The final HiSET exam has a cost of $53.75, paid at the end of the program when you register for the tests.  If this fee presents a hardship for students, a scholarship application may be requested.  Beyond the cost of the exam, there are no costs associated with adult education and literacy services.
