Bickelhaupt Arboretum is adding another way for the community to explore, learn, and spend time on its grounds.

The Arboretum received a $15,000 grant from the Energize Clinton Endowment in September to support an interactive StoryWalk and other improvements. The project will create a family-friendly outdoor learning experience for visitors of all ages.

“Any funding is incredibly helpful. This is an investment in an institution that is used by and beloved among people from across our community,” said Doug Smith, associate director of Bickelhaupt Arboretum.

“We’re grateful to Energize Clinton for supporting the Arboretum and helping us continue to create experiences the entire community can enjoy,” he added.

The StoryWalk comes during a year of growth at the Arboretum. This spring, Eastern Iowa Community Colleges (EICC) completed a $5.5 million renovation and enhancement project at the property including improvements throughout the grounds. Marvin, a larger-than-life troll created from reclaimed and recycled wood by Danish artist Thomas Dambo, also arrived this year.

The StoryWalk will feature “Leaf’s Adventure,” a book illustrated by EICC graduate Alyssa Vander Heiden.

“I was still in high school when I submitted some of these works of art,” Vander Heiden said. “It’s incredible to see my artwork become part of something the entire community can experience.”

Energize Clinton was shaped by input from more than 1,200 Clinton residents through surveys and meetings. The initiative combines Community Heart & Soul and Small-town Dreams to identify what residents value and build a permanent endowment to support community priorities.
